Eye bolts are designed to lift with the force straight along the bolt’s axis, and only when the load is within the bolt’s rated capacity. When the lift is vertical and aligned, the load path passes cleanly through the eye, giving the rated strength. If the lift is angled or off-axis, a bending moment is created on the eye and the effective capacity drops dramatically, increasing the risk of eye failure or load escape. That’s why they’re limited to straight vertical lifts that stay within the stated rating, and why you must not use them if they’re bent or damaged. If a lift isn’t perfectly vertical or if you need to lift at an angle, use appropriate hardware designed for angled loads.
